More health woes for meningitis patients
Excerpt:(CNN)-- Some patients who developed fungal meningitis in an episode linked to a Massachusetts compounding drug store are experiencing more health distress, officials stated. Patients are not just developing meningitis, swelling of the thin tissue bordering the brain and spinal cord; some are also developing an epidural abscess, which is a collection of pus in between the external treatment of the brain and spinal cord and the bones of the skull or vertebrae. Meningitis is a recognized problem of an epidural abscess, however exactly what 's puzzling some health professionals is that some patients were first detected with and treated for meningitis and then developed an abscess. "This is not typical for fungal disease," states Dr. Tom Chiller, who serves as deputy chief of the CDC's Mycotic (fungal) Diseases Branch.
