Current breast cancer screening guidelines may lead to more missed cases
The mammogram screening guidelines set forth by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), one of the top advisory panels on health issues to the government, may lead to more missed cancers and a decline in screening, new studies have concluded. Two new studies that looked at the effectiveness of the guidelines were presented on Nov. 27 at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) annual meeting in Chicago 9 Photos Busted! 8 mammogram truths every woman must know About one out of eight women in the United States will get invasive breast cancer during their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. In 2012, there will be about 226,870 new cases of invasive breast cancer and about 63,000 cases of new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS), the earliest state of breast cancer. In total, 39,510 women are expected to die in 2012 from the disease.
