Beauty junkies, check your cosmetics: Using beauty products that contain phthalates might be putting you at risk for early-onset menopause, according to a new study from researchers at Washington University in St. Louis. Researchers examined National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data and determined that women with the highest level of phthalates in their systems reported experiencing menopause 2. 3 years earlier. “Phthalates can disrupt your hormonal makeup,” says Dr. Laura Corio, an obstetrician at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.   Once in your system, phthalates can mimic and chemically change hormones in your body. For example, when phthalates mimic estrogen (which helps regularize your period), it confuses your body and results in a lack of real estrogen. This can cause irregular periods—one of the first signs of menopause, Corio says. (Phthalates aren’t the only chemical to blame.

The 42-day risk period for contracting fungal meningitis from tainted steroid injections ended on Wednesday (since the drugs were recalled on Sept. 26) but new case reports will probably continue to trickle into the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for at least a few months, said the CDC's fungal disease expert Dr. Tom Chiller. A funny post on the popular social news site Reddit soon turned into a serious health issue regarding cancer – and may have saved one man’s life, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. An anonymous user posted a story about his friend, who jokingly took a pregnancy test left by an ex-girlfriend and was surprised when the test came back positive.  Thousands of Reddit users posted comments on the story, many telling the original user to have his friend get tested for testicular cancer. Pregnancy tests detect the amount of the hormone beta human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in an individual’s urine.  While the hormone is produced by the developing placenta during pregnancy, it can also be associated with testicular cancer, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Officials are investigating 13 deaths over the past four years that may be tied to 5-hour Energy, the Food and Drug Administration confirmed on Wednesday. FDA records obtained by the New York Times show that since 2009 there have been 90 filings against the caffeinated shots, including more than 30 which were deemed serious or life-threatening. Symptoms included heart attacks, convulsion and one case of spontaneous abortion. "We take every adverse event report seriously," Shelly Burgess, an FDA spokeswoman, said to the Wall Street Journal. Burgess confirmed that the reports were filed by the company themselves. 5-hour Energy drinks are sold in 1. 9-ounce containers known as shots. While they don't label how much caffeine is in their bottles, a Consumer Reports investigation claimed that it could range from 6 mg in their 5-hour Decaf bottles to 242 mg in their 5-hour Energy extra strength bottles.

More than half of U.S. states have taken steps to limit public smoking since 2000 Smoke-free policies have also been enacted in some other countries (TIME. com) -- You can't smoke in most restaurants and malls, and those laws may be responsible for saving thousands of lives. According to two separate studies, recent laws that limit smoking in public places are contributing to fewer tobacco-related hospital visits and deaths.
