More than 500 people have been affected by whooping cough or pertussis this year. That's 10 times the amount reported by the end of 2011. More than 20 babies younger than a year have had the disease and six infants have had to be hospitalized. The Health Department is recommending people get a Tdap vaccine, which is a booster against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, to help prevent the spread of the disease, especially to infants who are too young to get a vaccine. "Vermont has not had an infant death from whooping cough in more than 20 years and we all must do everything we can to keep it that way," state health commissioner Dr. Harry Chen said in a written statement. "We are urging everyone over the age of 11 to take advantage of our vaccine clinics." Pertussis is a respiratory illness spread through coughing or sneezing.

Children in the U.S. appear to be getting as much shut-eye as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends, according to a new study. "We can't say this is the amount that they should be sleeping," said Jessica Williams, the lead author of the study and a graduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles. "All we could really do is compare our estimated norms with what is recommended, and it seems like it falls pretty well in line with the recommendations," she told Reuters Health. Williams and her colleagues point out in their study, published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, that there has been concern that U.S. kids are getting too little sleep.

Babies breastfed for 6 months may have lower iron levels | Essentials

Babies breastfed for 6 months may have lower iron levels

Excerpt:

The health benefits of breast-feeding have been intensely researched, but it's less clear exactly how long exclusive breast-feeding, without the addition of other foods, should be kept up. While six months of exclusive breast-feeding is often recommended, a new study shows that babies who began eating infant cereal at 4 months old had higher levels of iron than those who were exclusively breast-fed for six months. Both groups of  babies had sufficient iron levels, and there were no differences in rates of anemia, the researchers said. "The  biological significance of the higher [iron] levels  among those infants who began complementary feeding at 4 months of age remains to be determined," the researchers wrote in their study, published Nov. 12 in the journal Pediatrics.

Renewed warnings of suffocation risk from infant sleep positioners | Synopsis

Renewed warnings of suffocation risk from infant sleep positioners

Excerpt:

This 2010 image from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) shows the potential suffocation hazard for babies who are placed in infant sleep positioners.  / CPSC. gov Infant sleep positioners have been marketed and sold as ways to improve a baby's sleep, while reducing risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). A new report however from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds the products have caused 13 suffocation deaths in young infants since 1997. Breast-feeding tied to lower risk of sudden infant death syndrome Study: Sudden Infant Death Syndrome rates down, but more risk factors emerge Unintentional suffocation is the leading cause of injury death for U.S. children younger than 1-year-old, according to the CDC.

These babies are not likely to roll off the device because they do not move normally as a result of their disability."
